Electrical Design

Currently, we're seeking a Power Systems Engineer for a growing business specializing in supplying compressed air as a utility to various industries. This role offers a salary range of $90,000 to $120,000.

Industry: Compressed Gas

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess power systems available to customers and propose suitable electrical substation and distribution designs for new opportunities. Provide electrical system insights for proposal and estimate development.

  • Ensure compliance with national, regional, and industry codes and meet all essential safety criteria in the entire electrical design.

  • Create and maintain models of power and distribution systems using industry-standard tools like SKM Power Tools and ETAP. Keep these models updated from project inception through plant operations.

  • Engineer and design medium-voltage (MV) substations and medium-voltage to low-voltage (MV/LV) power distribution systems, incorporating components like transformers, switchgear, motors, and more.

  • Collaborate with customer engineers and inspection authorities on electrical matters.

  • Conduct Short Circuit and Arc Flash Analysis.

  • Develop technical specifications for procuring electrical equipment, assess bids, and assist in vendor selection.

  • Review and approve electrical drawing submittals from suppliers, utility providers, and the customer's engineering team.

  • Configure protective relay settings and programming for transformer, feeder, and motor relays.

  • Analyze motor starting scenarios and assess electrical system data from equipment suppliers.

  • Coordinate with Controls Engineers, Systems Engineers, and SCADA system suppliers to ensure accurate representation of electrical system input/output.

  • Create and maintain cable schedules, conduct equipment inspections, and verify on-site electrical distribution equipment during commissioning.

  • Develop Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) Electrical Single Line Diagrams and generate electrical drawings from a 3D model.

  • Produce design and fabrication packages for specialized panels and control schematics for equipment.

  • Engage with utility companies on electrical supply matters.

  • Identify and resolve electrical challenges throughout various project phases.

  • Review and approve contractor and fabricator electrical submittals.

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of electrical power system engineering experience, with a focus on utility electrical power systems or distributed energy resource projects.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with over 5 years of direct engineering experience in an electric utility, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with over 2 years of direct engineering involvement.

  • Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and relevant industry codes.

  • Willingness to travel up to 20% of the time, with extended site stays during certain project phases.

  • Proficiency in power system modeling and analysis software (e.g., SKM Power Tools, ETAP).

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification desired.

  • Familiarity with 2D and 3D CAD tools.

  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with customers and vendors.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct training sessions for operators on Electrical Distribution Systems.

  • Contribute to the development of engineering work processes and operational procedures.

  • Provide technical guidance for sales, business development, and the advancement of new technologies.

  • Assist in commissioning and starting operations for new facilities.
